NONIN PureLight™ & PureSAT™ pulse oximetry technology is minimally affected irrespective of skin pigmentation
Last week experts told of their fear that equipment designed to check people's oxygen levels in their blood - especially throughout the pandemic - may not be working as well on those with darker skin pigmentation.
The MHRA & NHS England have said that pulse oximeters may someimes give inaccurate readings of oxygen levels in the blood.
Pulse Oximeters work by beaming light through the blood from a source which is the received by a sensor on the other side of the finger. Darker skin pigmentation can sometimes prevent the light source from penatrating the finger properly giving you readings that may be overestimated.
One of the many symptoms of Covid-19 is shortness of breath, however, just because you are short of breath this does not mean your body is not getting enough oxygen.
Even with Covid positive patients who are breathing normally can sometimes experience low oxygen levels in their blood. This is because low oxygen levels don't always give off symptoms that are unique unto itself. Symptoms can be anything from shortness of breath and headaches to chest pains and high blood pressure. All of these symptoms can be associated with many other illnesses.
Having low oxygen levels for long periods of time can be dangerous and cause major problems in the body. One of the effects low oxygen levels can cause is hypoxia.
Hypoxia can go undetected for days before serious symptoms such as confusion as it can also interfere with the function of the brain.
NHS England published a document in the January of 2021 about "Pulse oximetry to detect early deterioration of patients with COVID-19 in primary and community care settings" - Click here to read.
PROACT Medical is the exclusive importer for NONIN & Creative Pulse Oximetry.
With our NONIN Pulse Oximeters they come with PureSAT™ PureLight™ technology.
This technology had been ground breaking in oxygen monitoring throughout the pandemic. Its technology helps users accurately monitor oxygen levels in all patients, especially those with dark skin pigmentation or from ethnic backgrounds. Whereas a normal pulse oximeter could give a reading that says the patient is healthy, the NONIN pulse oximeter can give you an accurate reading that is ±2 points within 70-100% SpO2*.
However, NONIN technology has been proven to me minimally affected by variations in skin pigmentation. Please see attached paper.
